Nuclear Power: The Trojan Horse of Energy Economics

Let me jog your memory. Remember that post where I dismantled the myth that nuclear power is an economic savior compared to wind energy? Oh, how we laughed at those “cost-efficient” calculations that conveniently left out key details. Well, buckle up—because it gets worse. The nuclear negative list is uglier than even my conservative analysis suggested.

The Flamanville Saga: A Case Study in Nuclear Nightmares

Take Flamanville, the infamous 1600 MW nuclear power plant. Originally budgeted at €3.3 billion, it’s now clocking in at a staggering €19 billion—and it’s still counting! That’s not just mission creep; that’s mission disaster.

But wait, there’s more. Over its entire lifecycle, my latest analysis shows that the real market (not the shady dictator-dealing kind) cost of the feedstock required—uranium or plutonium—could skyrocket to an eye-watering $5 billion. Yes, that’s billion with a “B.” And if you think that’s just bad luck, let’s add some geopolitical spice.

The Feedstock Fiasco

Let’s talk uranium, shall we? A little backstory from Niger, one of the world’s top uranium producers. Recently, the coup in Niger made waves, and not just for political reasons. On the streets, people are saying the French nuclear industry has been building its "cheap electricity" on the backs of Niger’s impoverished population. How? By purchasing uranium at prices so far below market value that, as we say in Germany, “da lachen die HĂĽhner” (even the chickens are laughing).

The result? Niger’s people were robbed of their wealth while French living rooms basked in nuclear-powered light. Now, with Niger standing up to this exploitation, what happens to uranium prices? Spoiler alert: they’re not going down. So much for predictable costs.

Wind Energy: Feedstock = Zero

And now, let’s contrast this with wind power. Wind’s feedstock? Nothing. Zero. Nichts. Rien. No hidden costs. No geopolitical meddling. No multi-billion-dollar overages. Just wind—free, sustainable, and blissfully uncomplicated.

The Real Cost of Nuclear

Nuclear energy isn’t just expensive—it’s a ticking time bomb of hidden costs and moral bankruptcy. From construction overruns to feedstock that depends on corrupt deals or dictatorships, the economics simply don’t add up. Wind energy, on the other hand, avoids all these pitfalls.

So, the next time someone tells you nuclear is the smarter choice, ask them if they’ve included all the lifecycle costs. Spoiler alert: they haven’t.

A Call to Action

The choice is clear: we need to invest in cleaner, more ethical, and genuinely economical energy solutions. Let’s stop paying for overpriced myths and start building a future powered by the truth.
