Have you ever thought about the innocent children working in mines in the DRC, just so we can power our smartphones, laptops, and electric cars? While we celebrate technological progress and the green energy transition, we must also ask: At what cost?
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, thousands of children are forced to mine cobalt and other critical minerals under inhumane conditions—exposed to toxic dust, working long hours, and risking their lives daily. These minerals are essential for the batteries that run our modern world, yet their extraction often comes with a heavy price: child labor, environmental destruction, and human suffering.
But here’s the deal — we, as consumers, have power. Every purchase we make sends a signal. By demanding ethical sourcing, supporting companies that prioritize responsible mining, and pushing for greater transparency, we can help drive change.
Sustainability isn’t just about clean energy. A future built on exploitation is not a future worth striving for.
Look at these children!. Think about them. And ask yourself: Is this the price we’re willing to pay for convenience and clean energy? Or we shall demand more from Big Tech as consumers?
For a deeper look into how the global economy fuels these injustices, read Jude S. Ngu'Ewodo 's book: "Clim
